local area
This is NOT the Algarve. There are no full
English breakfasts, British pubs, nightclubs
that never close or holiday reps.
Instead, situated in a tiny rural hamlet of
about twelve houses, Jardim da Tia offers
the chance to discover the real Portugal in
a stylish and beautiful location. Surrounded
by lush forests and mountains, with many
natural river beaches close by, Central
Portugal provides an ideal destination for  a
relaxing yet vibrant holiday.
The local community is still largely self
sufficient and the way of life remains largely
unchanged. A donkey and cart is the preferred
mode for carrying heavy loads, old ladies
dressed from top to toe in black can be seen
walking home from the market expertly
balancing their weeks groceries on their heads,
old men gather in the village squares putting
the world to rights and nobody locks their
doors. Throughout the year there are local
fiestas and carnivals, providing an opportunity
to mix with the locals and get a real taste of
life. This is the perfect place to relax, unwind
and try something new.
The forest is on your doorstep, ideal for walking, hiking
and nature lovers. This is great cycling country with
usually empty roads and tracks. The annual 'Tour' of
Portugal (known as the 'Volta') passes by the end of the
road in July.
Enjoy the great outdoors: fishing all around, golf in
Coimbra, canoe the Rio Mondego, paraglide over the
Serra da Lousa or try 4x4 off roading.
Visit the many local farmers markets piled high with
home grown produce, try one of the many well priced
restaurants in the local area and don't forget to sample
the local delicacies - Licor Beirao (the locally produced
aperitif, known throughout Portugal), Serra da Lousa
honey and regional cheeses...
The local village of Serpins is a pretty 2 km walk. It has
all the usual amenities  - shops, cafe/bars, bakeries,
pharmacy, health centre, small supermarket - plus a
Sunday farmers market, a pretty river beach & a railway
station (currently replaced by a bus service whilst the
line is upgraded) with a direct line to Coimbra
(reputedly one of the prettiest train journeys in
Portugal).
A ten minute bus/train/car journey takes you to Lousa, the
nearest large town, which has all amenities including a
cinema, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, several large
supermarkets and numerous shops, cafes, clubs, bars and
restaurants. Set high in the forested hillside there is also a
lovely ruined castle next to an enchanting outdoor swimming
pool. From here you can follow the schist trail through the
mountain villages.
Fifteen minutes away in the opposite direction is the small, pretty
town of Gois with a large river beach and frequent summer festivals
.
Arganil, with it's bustling weekly market, pretty park and cobbled
streets is about half an hour away.
The beautiful, medieval University city of Coimbra (36km) is
Portugal's cultural heart, home of the world famous Fado style
of singing and the setting for major festivals throughout the
year. It is lively and upbeat and has numerous festivals,
galleries, museums, clubs, bars, restaurants and international
shopping.
